Thanatos Class Destroyer
« on: March 25, 2014, 02:22:28 AM »
I haven't really played any of the universes with Thanatos Class Destroyers and was wondering if it was a good replacement for a Prom fleet. I can see its a bit slower, but it's other stats look great. Looking for some advice on how to use this ship and what kind of numbers to build it in.

Thanatos arent, a replacement for proms, you're kinda comparing apples and oranges tehre. It is more akin to a fast zeus than anything.

That said, they're good. IMO BFG got a good balance for this new ship, A lot of people use it like mad for NPC farming, but it can be argues it's not the best option for them. I think you'll enjoy adding ti up to your arsenal and seeing what you can do with it.

Empusas and pallas, on the other hand... ::)

Thanatos do not have rapid fire on Space Mines, which doesn't much affect attacks on players (players shouldn't ordinarily build Mines—unless they're under attack—and they can be cheaply nuked if they have), but it means that although Thanatos are faster than Zeus, and more fuel-efficient and loss-efficient (at least at targets without Zeus) than Proms, they have a relatively high build cost for attacking the largest (Colony) NPCs.  (Conquest players won't have noticed this because Conquest doesn't have Mines.)

So in Universes like what U3 is going to be (no space mines) the Thanatos is a good NPC killer. But might be a bit slow for real players. That's how I took your response. Correct me if I'm wrong. That being said I'll build me a prom fleet for PvP and some Thanatos for NPCs.

Ok, thanks for the input Matt. Looking forward to the diversity of ships and defenses.

Looking forward to the diversity of ships and defenses.

When Conquest came out, I was interested in seeing how people would deal with the diversity of ships where no ship is clearly better than the others... here was my summary:

TARGET HAS: Artemis
SEND: Poseidon, Curetes
AVOID: either not sending enough ships or wasting fuel on unnecessarily heavy ships (Proms, etc), Hermes

TARGET HAS: Erebus
SEND: Poseidon, Hades, any heavier ships, or overwhelming fodder (Atlas, Hermes...)
AVOID: Curetes (except with other fodder)

TARGET HAS: Curetes
SEND: Moros, Erebus, Proms, other capitals
AVOID: other fodder unless necessary

TARGET HAS: Poseidon
SEND: Hades, Curetes, other capitals
AVOID: Artemis, Erebus, other fodder

TARGET HAS: Moros
SEND: Athena, heavy ships (Proms & Ares), overwhelming Hermes?
AVOID: Curetes, other fodder (Artemis, Atlas)

TARGET HAS: Athena
SEND: Hades, Curetes, Proms, overwhelming Artemis
AVOID: Moros, Poseidon if not necessary

TARGET HAS: Ares
SEND: Curetes, Proms, overwhelming Artemis
AVOID: non-attack ships, mid-sized ships if not necessary (Posies, Moros)

But of course, none of that really mattered; pretty much all that mattered was holding territories (against attacks which are heavy on fodder, cargoes, and recyclers), collecting debris, and trading for Hydro.

So, I'm hoping to see some more interesting strategies—the intention should be that this is a real SFC'ers SFC—, but a lot (as has been the case since they were introduced) will depend on how the NPCs are tuned.  It may certainly be the case that in the end it is all about Proms... but it takes a while to even get the techs for Proms, and even then, the Apollo still has the highest firepower for the initial investment...  (Incidentally, Conquest didn't have Apollo.)

But you're primarily playing Conquest, which is the most friendly universe for them.
