Feature Suggestions / Alliance Forums Signatures and Display Rank
« on: October 14, 2010, 03:11:25 AM »
A pair of ideas requested.
  • Personalized signatures for alliance forums. Not completely practical, but good for the social aspect. Could have a limited size, like the ones on this forum appear to.
  • Show the person's rank in the alliance under the person's user name. It would make it easier to learn who has what rank on the fly.

Off-Topic / Colorblind Commanders?
« on: October 13, 2010, 12:58:36 AM »
When I was a preteen, I had my eyesight tested in order to see what strength of glasses I need. Part of the testing included whether or not I'm colorblind. As it turns out, I was. For me, relatively close shades of red and green are hard to distinguish, and I also appear to have a less common variation where I can't tell blue from indigo or purple. Ironically, my favorite color is the darkest shade of blue (or would it be purple?) one can find.

Of course, every time I tell someone I'm colorblind, they start pointing at object and ask "What color is this? What color is that? What color is my hair?". At this point, I refuse to answer it because it's senseless.

Anyone else here colorblind? If so, how has it affected you and what part of the spectrum do you get jumbled up in?

(Also, the fact that I spell it as color and not colour indicates I'm American :D.)

Universe 2 / I Joined the Bandwagon!
« on: September 09, 2010, 12:02:09 AM »
After some deliberation, I decided I would become a commander in Universe 2. As a partial reprieve from my typically Christian overtones in names, I'm using a handle more traditional of me: Youssarian. It's taken from a meerkat off the Animal Planet docudrama Meerkat Manor, as the social ineptitude and bizarre behavior from the animal is similar to mine.

However, my planets still retain church-like names.

I forgot how slow start-up is. What helps is doing your college work at the same time. It's interesting how quickly you can make 2.5 minutes pass while making graphs for economics class! At this point, I'm just building whatever builds quickest, although that dang Solar Array is a slow but necessary bugger.

In SFCO I was mad into it. I almost say "addicted" but I'm not quite comfortable with that term. In Uni2, I'm not aiming to do quite as much aggression, at least not at this point in time. Mostly build up my empire, set up colonies, and explore.

New Player Corner / Fleetsaving in Other Games?
« on: September 07, 2010, 07:30:08 PM »
Besides *inferior game*, are there games similar to SFC? And if so, do they have fleet saving like we do?

Fleet saving, although a good technique, has always seemed rather unnatural. You don't see the US Navy fleet being sent to random US territories when not in use so they're not blasted. Rather, they're kept in docks that are presumably heavily guarded and fairly secure from enemy attack.

I suppose it's because the places a player can send his/her fleet are so limited that FRS is needed. It'd be another matter altogether if you could simply station your ships on any planet that's uncolonized, your own, or an ally's/buddy's. I recall one game where your ship was always in play even when you logged off and you could park on planets not owned by others. Because the playing universe was so large, the chances of getting caught was fairly slim. There were also no-combat areas. In other games, your assets are completely untouchable unless you're logged in.

Just a thought that's been in my head a long time.

Alliances / If Your Alliance Has Disbanded, Please Read!
« on: September 07, 2010, 02:20:43 AM »
The alliance list on the wiki, at http://wiki.playstarfleet.com/index.php/Alliance_List, is getting mighty long. However, with recent shifts in alliances as well as many people leaving the game, it's possible that some of the alliances list have been disbanded. If an alliance of yours has disbanded and you think it may or might have had a wiki page, please check the alliance list. If it's listed, then remove it if you know how or contact an administrator to remove it. You may contact me, Phil Sutherland, or SGS 5. There are others but sadly, I don't know if they regularly visit the wiki and forum.

Thank you.

Off-Topic / Ironically

"If you don't like it, go play FarmVille!"
"This is SFC, not FarmVille!"
"You don't want to be attacked? Go play FarmVille."

I liked this game, and didn't particularly mind attacks.
But ironically...
I now play FarmVille. I'm sending neighbor requests to all of my friends that play.

My goodness, what has the world come to. :D
I don't know if this is going to be long term or just a phase.

I someday want to make something like what SFC is. I'm curious to see what languages and software were used to make it. I could probably whip together a game like SFC with Notepad, a browser and my web host, but perhaps there are other things that could be used.

Languages: HTML or XHTML, CSS, AJAX, PHP, SQL for databases, probably Ruby given the fact they use Ruby on Rails a lot as per their site.

Software: ???

Off-Topic / Web Sites that You Get Stuck On

You know how there are some pages which you may want to get on for only a brief period of time, but you end up being there longer than expected? Maybe your train of thought was distracted or something caught your eye.

For me it's:
Facebook
Twitter
This forum
Our wiki
43things.com
Futureme.org
Fanfiction.net
Youtube
Blogspot
TvTropes.org

Off-Topic / "The Colony" Season 2
« on: August 13, 2010, 03:08:03 AM »
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Colony_(U.S._TV_series)

Basically, it's a social experiment where nine or ten random people are brought together and attempt to survive a highly realistic post apocalyptic scenario. For this season, it's a viral outbreak in New Orleans. From what I've seen on the Interwebz, people either hate it or love it. I love it. Sadly I missed the first two episodes of season 2.

Anyone have the slightest clue what I'm talking about? It's on Discovery Channel.

Off-Topic / A New Meme on the Forum?
« on: August 12, 2010, 08:30:32 PM »

In my time as a meme aficionado, I've come across many. Chuch Norris, divide by zero, Epic Fail Guy, Raptor Jesus, Lolcats, Joseph Decreaux, etcetera. But I have only recently seen this picture used as a response to others, and I've seen it only on this forum. What does it mean? Is it like Pancake Bunny ("I have no idea what you're talking about, so here's a picture of a bunny with a pancake on its head")? I presume it's a way of mockingly dismissing an idea?

Original Universe / Alliances Family Tree
« on: August 05, 2010, 02:47:05 AM »
I'm mildly curious about these things. I'd like to see if we can form a "family tree" of sorts for alliances, like splinters or members going off and creating a new one or alliances coming together, etc. For example:

Empire
-NOB
--USS Raven (didn't last very long)
--Top Gun
--Wu Tang

Or

The Corporation
-United Alliance of Commanders (an alliance I formed and briefly led.)

Or

True Pug Empire
-War Pugs

I would love to see just how complex this could get. With thousands of alliances, I wouldn't be surprised if there are some pretty intricate webs.

(Maybe this goes in the Alliances section. If so, I know the mods will move it accordingly.)

Original Universe / I'm Retiring from the Game
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:22:14 PM »
Yep. In the old days I thought I would hit (v) mode and quit, but the temptation to come back to my preserved fleet is too much. Therefore I'm leaving my mines and ships open to anyone who wants them. PM me for coords.
