General Starfleet Discussion / My turn to say goodbye
« on: March 15, 2014, 12:09:56 PM »
To all a farewell.  I won't likely be logging in again.  You can call it a rage quit, but in reality it was more of a yawn quit.  I could rebuild, I've done it before, but I really don't have the time or inclination.  Nice hit Mr. P and Vinegar Joe!

It's been fun for over three years, but lately I've just been looking for an excuse.  For me it was getting very boring, so losing my fleet was that last little push I needed.  I'm not going to get into a rant about BFG or the state of SCFO, etc.  The game was fun, just for me no longer worth the investment of time.

It's possible I will feel withdrawal, if I do I'll probably try the new universe, who knows.

Cheers all!

General Starfleet Discussion / Re: Change made to Quest tokens?

Never mind, I was wrong.  I just finished a quest and lo and behold, a token in my inventory.  I am indeed losing it!

General Starfleet Discussion / Change made to Quest tokens?
« on: March 06, 2014, 11:12:59 PM »
I may be losing my mind but I could swear that when you completed two quests that awarded you 1/2 a token each, that you would end up with a token in your item inventory.  Now it appears that the token is immediately "used" and increments your lucky draw token count.

Am I losing it?  It make little difference except to keep track of the quest tokens granted, separate from the luck draw tokens earned each day.

I'm not sure it's healthy to feed babies too many raspberries!  ;)  Mind you, I just noticed that there is a wiki attached to Battlementat, so you're probably right about no one reading the update!

Keep up the good work FatBuddha, we all appreciate it!

As much as I am also upset that the game is suffering from a problem, people get a grip.  I am sure that BFG is doing what they can, and that they care about their customers.  If it goes on too long, I'm sure they will take steps to make sure things are made right.  As a precaution, I am FRS'ing my fleets (which still works) and I suggest y'all do the same and cut them some slack.

Today especially, there is a noticeable lag on many if not most ajax calls.  For example, deleting a message will take a few seconds to return (I realize that deleting a message is not a critical function).  Even clicking on an attack icon, for example, has a few second delay before the fleet composition dialog pops up.  Add to queue takes 5 - 7 seconds vs. the 2 - 3 seconds it usually takes.

New page loads, however, are much faster than before.  Not complaining just trying to helping you pin point any potential issues.  It's nothing critical, just a general feeling of sluggishness for ajax calls (compared to the previous platform).

The other symptom I've noticed is occasionally on the fleet screen when you dispatch a fleet, you get an all white screen for a few seconds, then the new fleet screen appears.

Some of you people need to seriously relax!!  To blame BFG for all possible issues surrounding the upcoming downtime is ignorant and borderline stupid. (yes I said it).

Here's a much simpler explanation for the luddites.

Pretend you had a phone book, and in the phone book was the phone number for BFG.  You've called this number for years and it's always worked.  Now all of a sudden BFG is getting a new phone number.  If you look up BGF in the phone book and call the old number, normally you will given the new number, or you might even be re-routed automatically to the new number.  Now imagine for some reason your phone company decides not to allow you to hear the new phone number for a week, even though many other phone companies update this information immediately, would this be BFG's fault??  Even worse, imagine that your new hi-tech phone can automatically re-route the call to the new number, but alas your phone company is not providing it.  It would be really nice if you could force your new hi-tech phone to use the new number.

Well you can.  Just following Achmed's instructions.

Most people will not have a problem, but the one's who do CANNOT BLAME BFG for the problem.  If you want to blame anyone, blame your ISP it is more than likely their fault.  Or follow Achmed's instructions.  Or FRS for a week before the outage!  ;)

In case you are wondering why you have to do this, DNS (Domain Name Service) is what translates a URL (i.e. www.playstarfleet.com) to an IP address (i.e. 192.168.1.12).  At a certain level, computers connect to each other via IP Address, not URL, so they need to know what address a URL is.  They make a request to a DNS server for that information.  To save bandwidth and time, the response to that request is cached in your local computer for period of time determined by the DNS server that served you the request.  Normally it is a reasonably short period of time, say 24 hours, but certain ISP (who shall remain nameless, safe to say their initial begin with AOL), set the TTL (Time To Live) on their DNS responses to one week.  So if you were an AOL user and did not clear your cache, and the destination IP address of a URL changed, you may not be able to connect for up to a week.

General Starfleet Discussion / Re: tiered NPCs
« on: February 10, 2014, 06:55:54 PM »
Speaking in terms of SCFO, the only uni I know, I can say that the smaller NPC's are easily available for the smaller players if they want them.  For me to use up any of my slots for an Enemy Fleet would be pointless.  Additionally I have come across many Large Enemy Fleets that have been not been hit (and all LEF's are profitable) and are about to disappear.  Considering an LEF lasts at least 24 hours, plenty of players had opportunities to find it and hit it and for whatever reason didn't.  To cap access to these to higher player would be pointless.  There are many times when I have most of my ships on missions, for example, when I'll hit a reasonable big LEF just to keep the points coming.  Heck I even keep enough of fleet aroudn at times while FRS'd to be able to pick off an LEF or two.  Or if I'm just bored and don't have much time on my hand, I send out some posis.

Lower ranked players (at least in SFCO) have plenty of opportunity to work they way up in ranks.  They may never achieve #1, but nor could I without playing 20+ hours a day.  I play reasonably often, and I have a hard time just catching the guy in front of me!

Bug Reports / Re: All games down

This isn't true and I'll take the blame for missing this notification. Unfortunately for me, it appears that the notice was sent to us on January 19th that we /may/ experience a server disruption. They send these to us pretty regularly for maintenance and they almost never result in disruptions lasting for more than a few seconds. In fact, in this case, our servers were the games reside were reachable throughout the maintenance period, but our load balances were disrupted making getting traffic to them problematic.

However, as many of you many recall, January 19th was the last day of my vacation. Following the end of my vacation I fell ill and was in the hospital for nearly a week. By the time I returned, I had lost track of this notification and failed to provide any warning.

As an IT Director, I can attest to receiving notices like this from our providers all the time and they rarely result in an outage.  So I am more than willing to cut Matt/BFG some slack, and I think everyone else should too.

I am trying to connect in order to FRS and SFCO is down.  I had better not lose fleets due to this!
