Browser change on smartphone?
« on: November 16, 2011, 03:05:05 AM »
I have a Blackberry Bold 9900 running OS7. I've had no problems playing on my browser until this afternoon I've noticed that 1/4 of the screen is now cut off on the right hand side. So basically I can't see planet resources, any messages or the logout button. I've tried viewing other websites on the phone and it all works perfectly. I'm just wondering if other people are experiencing this, and did BFG make any unannounced changes?

Depending on the Universe you are in there were some back end changes to how page displays are done. They will eventually be in all of the Universes.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of this change.. can I ask what the reasoning is? I don't play through the facebook UI because I don't like the lack of control of using iframes, and now the direct site (uni2 + x1) is like this too?

So does that mean that's the way it will be from now on? So we are penalized if we play from our phones?

It is a per-requisite for future code changes.

You are not penalized for playing from your phone. However, we do not officially support phone browsers.

I try to stay positive with the back end changes that are made, even if it means an inconvenience in the short run.
I can usually see the reasoning behind them; today's changes just seem like a big step backwards. I hope it is simply my tiredness that is preventing me from seeing the benefits. Or perhaps this is just step 1 of 2, and the intent will reveal itself soon.

I can't say when part 2 will be available for me to share publicly, but we are working on getting all new features out as soon as possible.

I see "867k players" as well, but that doesn't make it true.

The truth is, with a dwindling player base (and let's not try to kid ourselves by saying people the game is in great shape) across all unis, you would think that the company would try to retain the existing players by making it easier to play the game. I understand that making the game work on phone browsers would take extra effort, but don't you (BFG) think it would be worth it? Its not like the smartphone will be going the way of Betamax or HD-DVD. It's like Ford saying we're not going to build cars with navigation or CD players because we don't think it will make our cars easier and more enjoyable to drive. Besides, smartphones? Who's gonna use them in the future? They're just a passing fad.

/sarcasm

You never know. BFG is already trying to set UTC/GT to be on the computers as *the* time, so maybe they will start some get-rid-of-smartphones movement too?

In order to have a persistent chat system like they did talk about pre-SDE, they would need something like this iframe to play the game in while the "outer" page with the chat doesn't change. So most likely that is the feature Matt is alluding to above.

People on phones probably wouldn't want to take part in the chat, and there are surely more than a few people who don't want to have to use this new assumed framework, so hopefully they will come out with a 'mobile' version of the game that doesn't have this.

That's fair, but you would think that people using a smartphone to play outnumber  players who would use the chat.

Or at least come out and say "We're working on something that will interfere with people playing on their smartphone. We may or may not address this issue in the future, but we believe it will bring a positive change to the game"... rather than saying "we do not officially support phone browsers", which reeks of arrogance and close-mindedness.

I think BFG needs a PR person.

A game that requires the amount of time and attention that SFC requires necessitates the use of phones by many players. RL does happen and you can not always be at your pc.

The lack of the ability to use a phone to play would drastically change the way I and many others play the game. So much so that I could possibly be forced to give it up completely.

I see BFG turned on iframe again so I can't use my phone to play anymore
