upgrading ship propulsion
« on: December 29, 2009, 10:28:19 PM »
In the WiKi there is this interesting comment on the atlas and herc class ships:

"Once Pulse Drive level 5 is reached, the Hercules Class is slower than the Atlas Class."

The interesting thing is, in general, wouldn't you "upgrade" your ship engines to be the latest and gratest as much as possible? For example, when Warp is researched, wouldn't you put a warp drive in herc, poseidon, atlas, and whatever other class ships (dionysus') to make them faster/better?

How about pulse drive level 5 compared to Jet Drive level 7 and beyond? to they start to compare at all?

Just a thought.

Some hull types can't take the engine upgrades. It'd be like putting a jet engine on a motorcycle, not a good idea.

I disagree. How else can SCIENCE! progress if we don't take risks? To that end, I'll fund the jet-cycle project.

Considering I know a site where you can buy a kit to make a jet engine.........

They make a motorcycle with a jet turbine engine. It's called the Y2K. Jay Leno has one.  8-)

maybe the motorcycle analogy isn't the best, how about putting a jet engine on a ww1 Biplane,

?

Uh...also wicked awesome?

I agree, though, it would be nice if transports (Hercules, that is) and harvesters could upgrade their engines to keep up with everything else.

And that's really the Issue. I'm sure the herc's hull can handle a levl 5 pulse drive to make them just as fast as the Atlas again. And those recyclers are really slow too, so it would be nice to speed them up a bit.
